Watson Street Living

Watson Street, York

July 2016 - Present

Design Stage

A contextual infill project, offering high class residential living within the historic urban core of York. The project continues the urban form of Watson street providing expansive views of St Paul's Church.

Sustainability Strategy

At an urban scale this housing project in central York supports a strategy of sustainable development, densifying the city core removing the inherent commute & associated environmental pollution inherent in satellite suburban development. The project also utilises a vacant site currently in disuse and through its development provides much needed housing in the city centre.

Locally reclaimed brickwork maintains the heritage character of the Holgate district whilst lowering the embodied carbon & shipping distance of the project fabric. The use of timber for all windows, doors, internal partitions and fit-out enables significant carbon sequestration in the project, offsetting the environmental impact of development. Thermally massive elements including the brick skin & floor construction will promote significant thermal stability in these homes whilst enabling the stack ventilation of naturally heated buoyant air which will rise through the central glazed atrium, which also promotes natural light deep into the building.
